Shake Off the Slump: Ayurvedic Tips for Late Winter & Early Spring

Ever feel like winter just won’t quit? That heavy, sluggish feeling that creeps in around late February — the kind that makes it hard to smile, harder to get moving, and nearly impossible to resist another cozy nap? You’re not alone. And there’s a beautiful reason why you feel this way. In Ayurveda, this time of year is known as Kapha season — where the elements of earth and water dominate our environment and our bodies. If you’re feeling low, unmotivated, or emotionally sticky, you might just be experiencing a classic Kapha imbalance.

The Kapha Code: What’s Actually Going On?

Kapha dosha is made up of water and earth — cool, heavy, stable elements. In balance, Kapha gives us strong immunity, nurturing energy, calmness, and compassion. It’s the dosha that feels like a warm hug.

But when there’s too much Kapha? Think congestion, lethargy, emotional clinging, foggy mind, low motivation, and seasonal depression.

In climates like Vancouver (where I live) and Scotland (where my lovely client Cathy lives), this imbalance can be especially noticeable.

So what do we do?

We balance it the way Ayurveda always does — with opposites.

Here’s How to Lighten Up Kapha Season

☀️ 1. Wake Up Before 6 AM
This is my number one tip. Waking before 6 AM puts you in the Vata time of morning — it’s lighter, more energizing, and will help you avoid that groggy, sticky start to your day. Sleeping in too long during Kapha season can drag you down.

💦 2. Move Your Body & Sweat a Little
Kapha is dense. It needs movement. Exercise, dance, dry brushing, and even lymphatic massage can get things flowing. Try dry brushing before your shower or giving yourself a warm oil massage (Abhyanga) with mustard oil for an energizing boost.

🔥 3. Add Heat & Spice
Swap cold drinks for warm ginger tea. Say goodbye to creamy, heavy, oily dishes for now. Think: light, dry, warming meals with pungent spices like ginger, black pepper, turmeric, cumin, and long pepper (pippli). Cathy shared that she blends ginger into cubes — genius! Just don’t drink it cold 😉

🍽 4. Eat Light & Dry
Avoid cold dairy, excess wheat, fried food, and sweets — these all increase Kapha. Instead, favor foods that are light, dry, warm, and a little spicy. Think barley, quinoa, basmati rice, mung dal, steamed greens, and lightly sautéed veggies.

🧹 5. Spring Clean Your Space
Kapha loves to hoard — physically and emotionally. Decluttering your home can help declutter your mind. There’s a reason spring cleaning feels so good.

🫖 6. Try This Kapha-Balancing Tea

  • 4 cups water

  • 1 tbsp crushed cinnamon stick

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
Boil it all together and sip hot. It’s like sunshine in a cup.

🌬 7. Do Breathwork (Pranayama)
Alternate nostril breathing and deep belly breaths move the internal heaviness. Just five minutes can lift your whole mood.

🧘‍♀️ 8. Practice Stimulating Yoga
Sun salutations, camel pose, shoulder stand — anything that opens the chest and gets energy flowing is ideal. Kapha loves stillness, but it needs movement to feel alive.

🪔 9. Use Dry Powder Massage
Ayurveda recommends massaging the body with dry powders like Triphala or barley to “scrape” away excess Kapha. It’s simple, effective, and can be done at home.

🌿 10. Embrace the Herbs
Look into Guggulu, Haritaki, Pippli (long pepper), and Triphala — all known for scraping and reducing Kapha. They’re especially useful during a spring cleanse.

The Mind Matters, Too

Kapha imbalances can show up emotionally as sadness, resistance to change, or overattachment to people and habits. The Ayurvedic remedy? Acceptance.

When we accept what is, we release our grip on blame, stop leaking energy, and open the door to clarity. Acceptance isn’t giving up — it’s choosing inner calm so transformation can happen.

Let’s Step Into Spring Together

Now is the time to shake off the residue of winter — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

If you’re someone who loves inner growth, holistic rituals, and feeling lit up from within (hello Ace of Diamonds!), then Ayurveda was made for you. These practices aren’t about perfection. They’re about feeling alive, light, and connected again — naturally.
